Ever wondered why some people command attention the moment they walk into a room? They articulate their thoughts concisely, empathize genuinely, and inspire effortlessly. I’ve spent my fair share of time working with some of the most influential people and have picked up a few insightful habits they all seem to have in common.
Look around you. Who’s the person that always gets heard in a meeting? Who’s that charismatic friend always surrounded by people? They are influencers, and they have subtly mastered some habits that you can adopt too.

Through a confluence of genuine empathy, adaptive thinking, and compelling storytelling, influencers radiate a magnetic, persuasive aura that touches everyone around them.
1. Listening actively
Remember when you shared your concerns with your manager, and they listened, making you feel understood? Successful influencers often listen more than they talk. They pay heed to the words, tones, and emotions, making others feel valued. A well-known example is Richard Branson, who once said,
2. Harnessing empathy
I once worked with a CEO who had an incredible knack for making everyone feel seen and heard. Empathy was her superpower. Influencers connect with others on an emotional level, understanding their feelings and perspectives. Barack Obama famously opined,
“Learning to stand in somebody else’s shoes… can nurture the humility necessary to make good decisions.”
3. Crafting Compelling Stories
The art of weaving invigorating anecdotes is a key penchant of influencers. Ever noticed how some TED talks resonate more than others? Influencers, like Simon Sinek, use storytelling to sell ideas, not just products.
4. Embracing Changes
Effective influencers manage to ride the tides of change. I remember a colleague adapting his sales strategy during a downturn – a coin-toss that paid off. Influencers like him view change as opportunity-laden scenarios. Elon Musk, founder of numerous disruptive companies, tells us to
5. Planting Idea Seeds
An influencer I once worked with subtly planted an idea during a team meeting, instead of enforcing it. By the next meeting, it had grown into a team decision!
6. Building Strong Networks
Influencers actively build and maintain relationships. They realize networking is a vital part of growing their influence. Keith Ferrazzi said it best,
“The currency of real networking is not greed but generosity.”
7. Exuding Confidence
I’ve observed influencers to always pitch their ideas boldly, demonstrating their belief in their thoughts. As billionaire investor Warren Buffett suggests,
“You have to think for yourself. It always comes back to that.”
8. Employing Positive Body Language
Do you recall ever feeling at ease around someone because they maintained eye contact or had a friendly posture? Influencers understand the value of expressing openness and honesty through their body language.
9. Respecting Everyone Equally
Influential people treat everyone with respect, no matter their status. How much more inspired do you feel when your opinions are respected? Oprah Winfrey says,
10. Constantly Learning and Improving
Influencers never stop learning. Have you ever met someone who knows a little about everything? It’s both intriguing and inspiring, isn’t it? They constantly seek knowledge which accumulates to their expertise and expands their sphere of influence.
To influence is to inspire, and to inspire, one must influence honestly and constructively. You don’t have to be Richard Branson to be heard or Oprah to make a difference. Incorporating these little habits into your daily routines can make you more persuasive, relatable, and ultimately influential over time.
Remember, the true power of influence lies not in changing people, but in empowering them to change themselves.
Have you seen any of these habits in the influential people around you? Or better yet, in yourself? The journey to becoming an influencer is lifelong and ever-changing, much like the world around us. So, which quality will you start cultivating today?
We hope you’ve found this exploration of the habits of influential people enlightening and beneficial.
If you enjoyed reading it or found it useful, why not share it with your friends and colleagues? It could be the first step towards harnessing everyone’s potential to become a person of influence. Remember, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
